Rita M. (Domann) Jacobs, (1920-2017) – 97 years young
Rita Marie (Domann) Jacobs, of Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of Atchison, Kansas passed away in her home, early Sunday morning on July 30, 2017, surrounded by her family members.
A faithful Kansas native, Rita was born at home on her parent’s farm near Mooney Creek, Kansas on February 5, 1920. She was the seventh of ten children born to Louis and Elizabeth (Lynn) Domann. She grew up on her family’s farm and began her passion as a life-long learner in a one-room school house. She graduated from Winchester High School where she enjoyed playing basketball and participating in theater. Later in life she attended Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas and studied Art. She was one of the founding members of the Picture Lady team that aimed to educate elementary school children in their understanding and appreciation of fine art. She was known for gifting her grandchildren with good books, art supplies and lively encouragement to learn and create.
Rita married Lewis Jacobs on August 1, 1942. Beginning their married life in Arizona, they soon relocated to Atchison, Kansas where they raised their four children and helped to build their hometown community. They were avid supporters of Benedictine College and the Atchison Catholic Elementary Schools (ACES). Her husband Lewis passed away on May 17, 2000. Rita also volunteered with the Atchison Hospital and Sacred Heart Parent Teacher Association. She was an active volunteer for Theater Atchison and served on their Board of Directors as well. Having been raised during the Great Depression, Rita grew to be a positive, resourceful and resilient woman. She was known for saying “Always do your best and let God take care of the rest.” She loved to read, play the piano and listen to the opera on Saturday mornings. Many were the recipients of her exquisite meals where she welcomed family and friends together.
Rita is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Elizabeth, her husband Lewis Jacobs, her brothers Raymond, Raphael, Paul, Claude and Don, sisters Rachel, Agatha, Lorraine and Jeannette. Survivors include her sons David Lewis (Mary) Jacobs of Somers, Montana, Thomas Edward (Beth) Jacobs of Drexel, Missouri, daughters Elizabeth Lynn Fitzgerald (Michael) of Lincoln, Nebraska and Patricia Ann (Jeff) Lowry of Louisburg, Kansas. Grandchildren include Matthew (Cindy) Jacobs, Curtis (Debbie) Jacobs, Joshua (Treina) Jacobs, Nicholas Jacobs, Andrew (Jessica) Jacobs, Keegan (Madelaine) Fitzgerald, Kevin (Sarah) Fitzgerald, Maureen Fitzgerald, Bridget (Trevor) Ketner and Fiona Fitzgerald. Great grandchildren include Amanda, Erica, Anthony, Ben, Cory, Connor, Brett, Jefferson, Jessica, Tyler, John, Lilly, Aedan, Cole, Bailey Catherine, Rowan and Abigail. Rita’s great-great grandchildren are named Kean, Ava, Oliver and Logan.
A Rosary/Vigil will be held at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home 800 Kansas Ave, Atchison, KS 66002 on Thursday evening, August 3, 2017 at 7:00pm with visitation to follow until 9:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30am on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church 18760 Rogers Road, Atchison, KS 66002, with Fr. Dennis Wait as Celebrant. Burial will follow at 2:30 pm Friday at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.
