Patty Jane (McCoy) Smart, 85, loving wife and mother, died Monday, January 23, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

Patty was born on Sept. 20, 1931 in Halls, MO the daughter of Landon and Lena Mae (Wilson) McCoy. She graduated from Benton High School, St. Joseph, MO in 1949. Patty worked for “Big Smith Overall” Company after high school, was co-owner of the Hilligoss Shoe Store, and a Mary Kay Consultant for over 20 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, Bible School, volunteered with Awana Children’s Ministry and sang in the church choir. Patty served as Past President of BPW, was a member of Zonta and the 99s clubs. She loved taking walks, singing, fishing and her cherished indoor and outdoor gardens. Patty was also an avid KU and Chiefs fan.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Douglas A. Smart. Additional survivors include her six daughters: Linda Smart Robinson and the late Samuel Robinson II, Lyman, NH; Sharon Kay and husband Brian Shaw, Garden City, KS; Mary Jane and husband Robert Montgomery, Leawood, KS; Peggy Lynn and husband Douglas Barnes, Plano, TX; Joyce Ann and husband William Smith, Shawnee, KS; and Sarah Kim and the late Rex Biechele, Atchison KS. In addition, she enjoyed fourteen grandchildren: Jeffery (Brianna) Lagomarsino, Kimberly Lagomarsino, Carrye Jane (Carlos) Mantilla, Taylor Douglas Shaw, Lauren Gruchala, Jason (Anne) Downing, Gilbert Downing, Laura Smith, Adam Biechele, Rachael Biechele, Christine Buel, Travis Smith, Caitlin (Jake) Rhodes, and MacKenzie Smith. She has nine adoring great grandchildren: Miles and Landon Downing, Mateo and Luca Mantilla, Summer Gruchala, Marissa and Alex Harris, Maya Smith, and Violet Rhodes. She is also survived by a sister, Betty (Don) Masters, Gallatin, MO, a granddaughter-in-law, Xiaowei and the late Gregory Gruchala. Preceding her in death are her parents and siblings: Lavena (Russell) Wilson, Esther (John) Gibson, Alice (Pete) Lapaglia, Ruth (George) Elo, Shirley (Brownie) Brown, infant siblings Hyla and Landon Jr, a grandson, and two son-in-laws.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Friday, Jan 27th, 2017 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison KS. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan 26th, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home from 6:30-8:30 PM.
