Joseph Eugene  Vollmer
Joseph Eugene “Gene” Vollmer, 87, of Louisburg, KS, formerly of Atchison County, KS. died Sunday, Nov. 17th, 2013 at the Louisburg Health & Rehabilitation Center, Louisburg, KS.

Celebration of Life Services will be 12:00 noon on Saturday, Nov. 23rd, 2013 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Myron Anderson officiating. The body will be cremated following the services and private family interment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until time of service on Saturday morning and family and friends are invited to a luncheon following the service at the Pepper Mill Restaurant, 101 Commercial St. Atchison, KS. Gene was born on June 2, 1926 in Atchison County, KS., the son of William and Anna (Hiebsch) Vollmer. Mr. Vollmer was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. After returning from the service he worked as farmer and then owned and operated his own excavation company,” J.E. Vollmer & Son Construction Company, in Kansas City. He retired in 1989. Mr. Vollmer was a member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Raytown, MO, was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Deer Creek Sportsman’s Club, Hastings, MO., was famous for his wine making, a champion pinochle player, enjoyed gardening, horse shoe pitching, playing bingo and wintering in Donna Texas at the Big Valley Trailer Park.

He married Betty Jean Kidwell on April 27, 1950 at St. Louis Church, Good Intent, KS. She preceded him in death on June 8, 2011. Survivors include a son, Anthony “Wayne” and wife Beth Vollmer, Louisburg, KS., and several nieces and nephews. His parents, wife Betty Jean, a brother, William “Bill “Vollmer, and three sisters, twin sister – Mary Totsy, Virginia Miller, and Caroline Underwood preceded him in death.
